How to Tell the Age of Your Water Heater in Schererville, Crown Point, and Olympia Fields
It’s true, nobody celebrates their water heater’s birthday each year, but wouldn’t it be nice to know how old it was? An average water heater will last between 10 and 15 years, and it’s a good idea to know how old yours is so that you can make an informed decision about when it’s time to invest in a water heater replacement. The key is to find the date of manufacture in the water heater’s serial number, and, because water heater companies all have their own ways of doing things, we’ll give you the specifics of where to find the date on a variety of brands.
Bradford-White, Jetglas, Lochinvar, Energy Saver, Golden Knight, and Knight
The very first letter of the serial number indicates the year.
They don’t use the letters I, O, Q, R, U, and V.
They begin with the letter A in 1964 and continue in 20 year cycles—A will appear first again in water heaters manufactured in 1984 and 2004. A serial number beginning with B indicates that a water heater was manufactured in 1965, 1985, or 2005, and so on.
American Water Heater Company
The first two serial number digits indicate the year of manufacture.
For example, if the first two digits are 01, you know your water heater was manufactured in 2001.
A.O. Smith, Glascote, Perma-Glas, & Rheem
The third and fourth digits indicate the year of manufacture.
For example, if the serial number begins 5599, the year of manufacture is 1999.

State Industries
Use the second and third serial number digits to determine the water heater’s year of manufacture.
For example, a serial number beginning with G98 would indicate a year of manufacture of 1998.
