Lighting Your Water Heater Pilot Light
So your water won’t get hot? A frustrating experience at the best of times. But not to worry, the solution is generally rather simple! And Reichelt Plumbing is here to help.
Manual or Automatic?
There are two types of water heaters — manual heaters and automatic. To determine yours, you’ll first have to find the magic silver box on the side of your appliance. On the silver box will be a dial that says “pilot”.
If there is also an ignition button on the box, you have an automatic water heater. If not, you have a manual.
Re-lighting A Manual Water Heater
Open up the metal sheet that covers the pilot button. Now this part is key. Turn the pilot dial all the way off and wait at least ten minutes for the natural gas to dissipate. Grab a longer lighter to preserve your fingertips, turn the pilot dial to the “pilot” position and set the temperature to “low”.
Now in one fluid movement, hold down the pilot button while you use the long lighter to hit the burner. Keep your finger on the pilot button for 20-30 seconds. And voila! Your light should be glowing!
Re-lighting An Automatic Water Heater
You are in luck – no lighter needed here! Simply press the pilot dial while holding down the ignition button for 30 seconds and you are all set!
