Unclogging a drain is a far from glamorous business, but sometimes you just have to do it when the need arises. There are many ways people have gone about unclogging drains, but it begs the question of whether or not there is an optimal way that will work every time. There are plenty of cases where you are going to need a professional’s aid, but here are some DIY methods that can help to clear a clogged drain.

Using a Plunger or Drain Snake

If your sink is completely clogged with no water able to pass through, your first attempts should either be using a plunger or a drain snake. They are both tools that will tackle a substantial clog head-on. For use of a plunger, remove the drain stopper and fill the sink up halfway or slightly less with water, and take a cup-topped plunger to it. After several fast plunges, check and see if the water is starting to drain. Drain snakes are also optimal tools because they are both malleable and can firmly grip a clog that has become substantially lodged. If a snake cannot remove a clog, you should no doubt call a plumber.

Boiling Hot Water and Vinegar With Baking Soda

At first, try to use plain, boiling water on an obstruction in your sink. It is stressed, however, that the water has to be boiling; just normal hot water will not stand a chance against a drain obstruction. Make enough to pour more than once, as it may take several pours before the clog can work its way out. If the water on its own is not working, you can try incorporating baking soda and vinegar. To start, pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain. Without adding water yet, pour half a cup of vinegar. There is going to be a harmless reaction in the form of bubbles; wait around three hours before flushing with water.
