Top 3 Reasons Your Toilet Won’t Flush
Toilets are an absolutely necessity in homes. But toilet troubles can be a huge burden for homeowners. For as often as toilets are used, however, it’s not surprising that they tend to have a decent amount of issues.
Luckily, most toilets aren’t too complex and their problems are usually relatively easily solved. If you find yourself in the midst of toilet troubles, here are three common reasons why your toilet won’t flush properly.
1. First, and perhaps most obvious, is that there is a clog in your pipes. Contrary to popular belief, a clogged toilet doesn’t always lead to the bowl overflowing. Clogs in your toilet can also cause the toilet to drain slowly or incompletely.
If you notice your flushes aren’t quite as productive (or in case of the toilet overflowing), check for a clog first. An ordinary toilet plunger will usually do the trick for removing small clogs, but if that doesn’t work, there’s no need to panic. Call in the pros to lend you a hand (or a toilet snake).
2. A faulty flapper or lift chain can also be the culprit behind a non-flushing toilet. A weak flapper or lift chain can often be detected by simply lifting the toilet tank cover and checking to see if it is cracked, damaged, or loose. In the case of a faulty flapper or lift chain, your toilet’s flush will be weak or you might notice the sound of water running constantly in the tank.
3. Toilets need ample amounts of water to run properly. If you aren’t getting any power behind your flush, check the water level within the toilet tank. Most modern toilets will have a fill line marked inside the tank. Check to be sure the water is up to that line or at least about an inch below the overflow tube.
And there you have it! Toilet fixes as easy as 1-2-3…hopefully.
